Independence - Not All it's Cracked up to Be

Ahhh....what I feared came to pass: Mami was hit by a vehicle. I didn't see nor hear it but found her home outside as I went out to car to pick up Katniss Beagle at vet's (bad cough sec. to heart-worms). Mami let me scoop her up w/o moving much and lay in my lap as I drove (I know, I know, but for her it was most comfortable).

Mami de Gund in my chair
Damages: multiple shallow wounds, some road rash, 3 broken ribs (1, 2, 3 on the right side) but no hemo/pneumothorax (thank you, God). She stayed overnight at vet's to be sure; came home today hungry, moving OK, but is now a house dog out on leash for her business and exercise.

We were blessed this time - don't want to defy this blessing by cont. to let her jump out of yard. I can put up a hot wire and may yet do that to be extra safe as I'm sure I won't always catch her before she jumps up but for now, we don't think she'll be jumping much as her ribs heal.

On a happier note, Snowman will be traveling to his new foster to adopt home this Thursday. We will all miss Snowy as he charmed everyone who met him. He finally mastered "sit." YESH. He's going to New York state in the PETS rig with two other Missouri Great Pyrs. It will be a happy, very early day for all!

  1. OMD, so sorry that Mami was hit by a car! Glad she's okay, is part of the yard fenced?
Glad to hear that Snowman is getting fostered to adopt, congrats!

    1. The entire yard is fenced; Mami has springs for legs and goes over my stone porch instead of the fence. She is now quite sore, has two pain meds plus antibiotic and is currently no longer jumping. It sure was hard to say good-bye to Snowy.

  2. Goodness! I'm so sorry that Mami was hit by a car but so glad she is going to be okay. Your heart must have sank when you found her. I'm sure this will deter her from jumping the fence, if even just for awhile. I am so happy for Snowman, but I sure am gonna miss hearing about that guy! :)

    1. As I told the 2 Punk Dogs, saying good-bye to Snowy was tough; he is such a character!
Mami is OK but sore :(. She made it home up next to the steps where I found her. Poor girl. We spent some alone time together today.

  3. Thank goodness Mami will be okay! Oh if only they could understand what we are saying. We have had a few fosters that we had to tie out to go potty. Hope she is feeling better soon & that she learned her lesson (albeit the hard way).

    Good luck Snowman!!

    1. I'm now looking for a home w no fence for Mami so she will always be on leash w her person, like my first two dogs were w me.

  4. Loved your title. I see the appeal of independence for dogs but yes, the cost can be high. If we moved to a bicycle society, maybe it would be safer for dogs who get out of their yard.

Glad to hear Mami will be okay. Hope Snowman does well in his new home.

    1. Wish I could use my bike more; more bikes, fewer cars, safer dogs and healthier humans!
